Beer Pairing Dinner Update

Brother Knights

As a prelude to last night’s business meeting, we held an initial planning meeting to discuss the upcoming annual Beer Pairing Dinner to benefit the Knights ultrasound program. The date for the event is April 11th and tickets will go on sale starting Sunday March 1st. Tickets will be $45 (same as last year) and attendance will be limited to 100 people, so we expect it to fill up fast! Last year’s dinner was a great success and as a result Council 9597 was able to contribute $3700 to the ultrasound program. This year we will be supported by Our Lady of Fatima’s Respect Life committee in supplying some of the program material and speakers.

With the Knights in attendance last evening, we discussed the various roles and tasks that need to be addressed and we made good progress.

Important Message from Colorado Catholic Conference

ccc

House Bill 1135 seeks to legalize physician assisted suicide.  A law allowing assisted suicide would demean the lives of vulnerable patients and expose them to exploitation by those who feel they are better off dead. Such a policy would corrupt the medical profession, whose ethical code calls on physicians to serve life and never to kill.  The voiceless or marginalized in our society – the poor, the frail elderly, and racial minorities would be the first to feel pressure to die.

The Colorado Catholic Conference OPPOSES this legislation.

This bill will be heard in the House Public Health Care & Human Services Committee on Friday, February 6, Upon Adjournment, in House Committee room 271.

Please contact you Representative and the members of the Public Health Care & Human Services Committee and ask them to OPPOSE  House Bill 1135 which would legalize physician assisted suicide in Colorado.

Request for Volunteers This Sunday – Free Throw Contest

Brother knights,

In support of the free throw contest this coming Sunday, January 25, we need a few volunteers.  Here’s what we’ll need help with:
  • Working the registration table for contestants as they arrive (2)
  • Judging each competitor as they shoot (2)
  • Rebounders (4+)

Set up will start at 1230-1, while competitors are arriving.  The competition will start at 130pm.  Set up entails getting the registration table up and organized, marking the closer free throw line for the younger shooters, and helping arrange the age groups.

Please, if you are available, come to help and support this fun event!

R.I.P. SK John Di Nucci

It is my sad duty to pass along the news just received that Sir Knight John Di Nucci (Honorary Life member of both the 3rd and 4th Degree) passed into the arms of our God and Savior yesterday, Jan 23, 2015 at 12:40 PM.  His wife Mary had passed awhile back.  SK John had moved back East to be closer to his family.  SK John was just four days shy of his 92nd birthday.
Some interesting facts about SK John (born Jan 27, 1923 and died Jan 23, 2015):
1.  He joined the Knights and achieved his 1st, 2nd and 3rd Degrees on Feb. 01, 1951.  He was a Knight for 63 years, 11 months and 8 days!
2.  He became a Fourth Degree Knight on Feb 1, 1953.  A Sir Knight for 61 years, 11 months and 8 days!
3.  He served in the US Navy during WWII and was associated with the Manhattan project.
4.  He was a member of Council 9597 and Assembly 2551.
SK John always had a “twinkle” in his eye and was a true Navy man when it came to enjoying life.  He could have been a radio announcer with his deep voice and his wry sense of humor.  He always had that “New York” – east coast – accent that managed to capture the moment of any discussion with a wee bit of sarcasm.
SK John and his wife Mary will be buried in Arlington National Cemetery sometime this coming summer; no further details available at this time.
For those of us that knew John, and those that missed meeting him,  it is fair to say:  A Great Catholic Gentleman has returned home to be with our God!

Knights Clean Up 15th Place!

WP_20141212_11_04_44_Pro[1]On December 12th, 7 Knights of our council gathered to clean up a stretch of 15th Place, just south of the parish.  They were blessed with beautiful weather and many hands!  Led and organized by Pete Aberle, Brother Knights Bob Boden, Stan Collins, Don Frevert, Michael Majeres, Rich Phillips, and Pat Stewart spent about 45 minutes patrolling the stretch between Miller St. and Kipling which was “adopted” by the council many years ago.  Through their efforts, 6 bags of garbage were collected and disposed of.  This effort concluded the council’s efforts for this year.  We will organize another clean up in the spring.  Afterwards, the group retired for a pleasant lunch and well deserved beverage!  Thanks to all who helped, and we hope to see more members in future clean up days.  More pictures after the break…

15th Place Cleanup Scheduled

Brothers are invited to join the council this Friday, December 12th for a cleanup on 15th Place between Miller and Kipling Streets.  We will gather at the intersection of 15th and Miller, just south of the parish about 10:30.  We’re planning on working for an hour or so, then retiring to the American Legion for lunch and a possible beverage.  All are welcome; dress appropriately for the weather and some dirty work.

Keep Christ in Christmas

keep_christBrothers, as you saw in our November and December newsletters, Council 9597 will be holding it’s annual “Keep Christ in Christmas” dinner after the 5 pm Mass on Saturday, December 6th (That’s tomorrow!!).  For those who have been, you’ll recall it as a fun social occasion to spend time with your family and brother Knights.  Those who haven’t ever been should look forward to good food, good company, and an opportunity to reflect on the “Reason for the Season”, our Lord and savior, Jesus Christ.

Saint Nicholas, former bishop of Myra, will be making an appearance (more or less) as he has in years past.  If you’d like St. Nick to deliver a gift to a child/grandchild, bring it, and make sure it is clearly marked with the recipients name.  He’ll also be available for family photos!

Attendees should bring a side dish to share.  The council will provide Turkey and Ham, mashed potatoes, some beverage choices, and dessert.

I look forward to seeing many of you there!  For those who cannot join us, let this be an opportunity for me to wish all of you a blessed Advent, and the merriest of Christmases!

Coats for Kids Distribution This Friday, Nov. 28th

Brother Knights, as you know, our council decided to use the proceeds from the November breakfast to purchase 2 cases of coats to be distributed to children attending 3 of Denver’s poorest parochial schools by Catholic Charities.  Assembly 2551, made up of 4th degree knights from our council (along with 3 other councils) also bought 2 cases.  If anyone wants to assist with the distribution, the information is below.

Location: Catholic Charities – 4045 Pecos Street, Denver.
Show time: 9:00 a.m. to set up.
Start time: 10:00 a.m.
End time: 2:00 p.m or until when all coats are distributed, whichever is sooner.
It’s great that we were able to help with the purchase of these coats, but actually working with the children in need is what makes the program worthwhile.  I hope to see some of you there!
